First mate on the deliver of the new "Phoebe" 30 metre from Southampton
to La Carona Spain.
Two years ago I helped take this owners 23 metre Prinses to be sold in
the med so that he could start to building this new incarnation of
Phoebe. The new Phoebe is a 30 metre semi displacment motor boat
built by MOONEN in Holland,
capable of 25 knots and crouses at 18 knots. I was asked to join the
boat just after the owner had tacken delivery of her and we set off on
her maiden voyage which was ment to be to myorca, but with every other
new boat I have been on, there were some teething troubles on root. I
was very inpressed with the ship yards response and even though I had
to leave the boat in La Carona, the ship yard were there dealing with
the problems. Within a couple more days the owner was on his way.
7/2009 -
Deliver "Gallo" (Contest 48' cs) to Falmouth.
The owner wanted to start his hoilday in the west country and come back
with the provaling south westerly winds (sensible if youask me!). No
point in strugerling in head winds when you can get someone eals to do
it for you, and we did have F5-6 winds on the nose to begine with which
eased off to F3-4. this ment we could motor sail to Falmouth.
6/2009 -
Take part in the Cumberland Cup (part of the Royal Thames Yacht Club)
on
"Matterhorn" Mystic 60' management boat.
I was privileged to be asked to take part in this club event by the
owner of Matterhorn who acted as navigator and tactition during the
racing and allowed me to be the helmsman throughout the weekend of
sailing.
25 yachts from the Cumberland fleet took part and 140 members of the
Cumberland Sailing Society (founded 1775 and believed to be the longest
continually run yachting society in the world!) met in Cowes and took
over the Royal Yacht Squadron as a base for its social and committee
requirments with the kind permission of the Rear Commodore of course!
We took part in three races and completed all, but with the Cumberland
Numbered handicapping system in use (which no one can explain!) we
didn't win anything. We did have a bit of a cock up on the start of the
first race and were a little late over the line. The second race that
day started much better and we got a good start with a respectable
second over the line. On the Sunday there was just a pursuit race run
with staggered starts according to the renowned numbering system! This
is where it really showed how much time we had to make up on the other
boats. Anyhow, we did overhaul quite a few of the smaller boats and
didn't disgrace ourselves.
Here's some pic's.
6/2009 -
Skipper Contest 55' "Wind Dancer" from Hamble to St Peter Port and back
again.
This is a boat that was under my care and being sold through Charles Watson Marine. It was
brought into the country and put into a customs warehouse scheme (as it
did not have the VAT paid on it) then it was bought by a South African
who only had a short amount of time to stay in the EU before he had to
pay the tax on the boat. To slightly extend this amount of time (to
complete work being carried out on the boat before he left for good) we
had to take the boat out of the country under the old ownership and
bring it back in under the new.
Anyway, it was a very good excuse for a very good reach across the
channel to St Peter Port, but the next day the wind dropped and we had
a bit of a motor back! Well you can't have everything can you!

Skipper for Rick Tomlinson on
Photo shoot for Dauntsey's School and
their 1913 pilot cutter the "Jolie Brise". The pictures can be seen on
the web site Jolie
Brise Home and you can follow their progress or charter the boat.
The Jolie Brise is owned, maintained and sailed by the pupils of Dauntsey's School.
Dauntsey's is a leading independent co-educational day and boarding
school in the heart of Wiltshire. Unusually for a land-locked school,
Dauntsey's has a long association and passion for sailing. The School
Sailing Club was founded in 1970 and its association with the Jolie
Brise began in 1977.
The world famous gaff pilot cutter was the last boat to carry the Royal
Mail under sail and has won the Fastnet Race three times, including the
first race in 1925. She has twice been the overall winner of Tall Ships
Races, including the Transatlantic Races to the USA and Canada in 2000.
This year, sailed by Dauntsey's pupils, the Jolie Brise is taking part
in the Tall Ships
Atlantic Challenge.

Charter to see the final sailing of the QE2 from her home berth of
Southampton.
Lead skipper for ma marine.com
of a
three boat Night charter.
This has had to be one of the most difficult and emotional charters I
have had the pleasure of being involved with.
The difficulty came with it being at night - combine that
with
the amount of other boats that were there to see the QE2 off and
there's a whole possible melting pot of trouble! It's bad enough at
Cowes Week with the amount of boats around - if you've been
there
- think of that at night!
The emotional side came from our guests - all fans and/or
previous passengers on that majestic liner. One guest was the
aunt of the First Officer on board that night! We watched the fireworks
display and followed the QE2 out of the Solent. The other followers
started to dwindle as we headed for Cowes and as we neared Portsmouth,
we found we were the only ones left to say goodbye by the time we had
reached the forts. There were tears from the guests as we watched her
sail slowly off into the distance for the last time.
8/2008 -
The Southampton Boat Show
Working for Charles Watson
Marine, cleaning and selling
Contest,
Wauquiez, and Latitude 46 yachts.
This year we had the New Contest 60', which was well received and up
for Yacht of the Year 2008-9 and
the New Wauquiez 55' pilot saloon, a contrasting boat to the Contest.
And from Latitude 46 we presented, for the first time, the Tofinou 9.5
and
the Tofinou 7. Both were constantly admired for their modern classical
looks, and the 9.5 can shift as I had the opportunity to sail it before
the show (8-9 knots reaching in 15-20 knots of wind).

Skipper "Gallo" Contest 48'cs management boat from Brighton to
Southampton.
After holidaying on his yacht, the owner was fed up with battling head
winds to get the boat home in time, so he called on us to finish the
job, leaving him time to enjoy the rest of his holiday before going
back to
work.

More on the Feeling 55
The Owner of Rum
Truffle has made his mind up over which boat to buy. The Feeling 55
came out on top (even though the original test sail did not go as well
as
originally hoped) and this month I was asked to go with him back to Les
Sables d'Olonne (home of the Vendee Globe
single handed yacht race around the world) to look at his boat
in
production (hull No.3), to assist him and his family on hull No.1,(
which he was being loaned while all the French took their
annual holidays), and to bring the boat up to England for the
Southampton Boat Show.
Now that I have
had more of a chance to sail the boat, I can give a better verdict on
her. I originally complained about the hydraulic streering on the boat,
and
with more time this did not become such an issue but if you do lose
concentration (say, playing with chart plotters), then the boat will
wander without any indication from the helm. I am a total advocate
of the sail plan on this model (we had fully battened in-boom
furling main sail, self tacking Solent jib and a big
furling gennaker on
the retractable bow sprit) - for cruising it is great - the Solent
gives excellent performance to wind and does not disturb
the crew when short tacking. Come off the wind more
and release the gennaker and she shows her true potential.
In 15ks of wind
we were doing 6-7ks through the water at 40' off the wind - come
another 20' off the wind with the gennaker and we
were making 9-10ks
7/2008
The INTEL Regatta. Hired by Intel to capture the event for
those that took part. Rick Tomlinson and I took to the water again.
As in the previous year, Intel host this event to bring together
an abundance of corporate computer companies to race each
other on
the high seas (well -
southampton water and the Solent). Each company had their own SunSail
37' and the fleet was bigger this year,
with 32 boats in total, all competing on the same level even though
most
had never sailed before
6/2008
Two day charter on the 30' rib for Volvo Cars, acting as press
and support boat for the six J80's and the TP52 that they
had going around the Isle of Wight on the JP Morgan Round the Island
Race. This year had to be one of the most eventful Round the Island
races
of the last couple of years!
Force 5-6's
and wind over tide around St Catherine's point made it very
busy
for
the
coast guards and all the competitors, as there were lots of mayday
calls and a lot of
people helping each other out (if there is one time to
fall overboard
then do it when there are 1,500 other boats around). We did our bit by
removing some guests from a J80
(after a knock
down and sea
sickness) and helping to relocate someone who had gone overboard from
one boat and been
picked up by another.
Mark LLoyd (lloydimages.com)
was the stills photographer on board for the day and there was also
video
being shot. Mark ended up with 4/5 shots in the
national Sunday papers
(Telegraph and the Times), inc. full centre spread
in the Daily
Mail.
6/2008
Skipper of Azimut 42' for mamarine.com for the start of the
Round Britain Power Boat Race that started off Portsmouth. The
pic
is of the start of the first group to go, we
followed them for a bit, but even at 30kts they were soon out of sight.
We carried
on and let the next wave over take us at the Needles, then in to
Yarmouth for a spot of lunch at Saltys restaurant.
6/2008
Skipper 30' rib to pick up guests at Cowes and take them to
dinner up the Beaulieu River at the hotel The Master Builders.
6/2008
Skipper for photo shoot of the KUEHNE
+NAGEL regatta, Rick as always was behind the lens. 10 Beneteau 40.7's
were out on the water for what turned out to be a series of four
races that day. Companies likeVirgin Cargo,
British Airways Cargo and a host of other freight and shipping
companies
took to the water to pit their wits against each other.
5/2008
Skipper for Rick Tomlinson on his 30' rib
(as seen on my banner). This time we were out for the Sweden Yacht
regatta in Cowes I.O.W. Over twenty yachts took to the water and
all got snapped! With a presentation that evening (by
Rick) they all got Schnapped again!!!

Test sail on New Moody 45' with owner of Rum Truffle.
Then on to France to test sail the new Feeling 55'. The pictures are in
Yachting World. I had the chance to helm both boats and for the type of
boats they are, I was very pleased with the performance
they both achieved. The only let down for me was the hydraulic
steering on the Feeling - there was no feedback and it was not very
responsive, but this was hull No.1
